The Cleveland Museum of Art / Cleveland, Ohio
Overview
As Director of Interiors for Rafael Viñoly Architects, Gillian Rose developed both architectural and interior material and finish components, for this state of the art Museum.
The exterior stone cladding of the new gallery wings is composed of alternating bands of granite and Georgia White marble, interwoven with rough-hewn granite. This material rhythm establishes a measured dialogue between the differing architectural sensibilities of the 1916 building and the Breuer structure, allowing the new work to both mediate and belong.

Indoor plantings and filtered daylight gently draw visitors inward, toward the heart of the plan. The piazza unfolds as a social clearing, framed by a café, restaurant, and retail space—places that invite pause, gathering, and return.

The historic gallery spaces were renewed through a layered palette of rich materials and custom colours, chosen to honour their scale and texture while allowing natural light to move freely and animate the rooms.

The result is a renewed cultural environment for the city of Cleveland—one that weaves public life and the arts into a shared civic experience..
